Maintaining a relationship under the glare of the limelight is no easy task. Amidst cheating rumours, irreconcilable differences and even lack of time and distance, some long standing pairs called it quits.

Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow
After a decade of marriage, in March this year, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced that they were "consciously uncoupling". The actress took to her website Goop to share the big news. The couple reportedly struggled to save their marriage over the last year undergoing counselling as well, but finally decided to call it quits. Despite their break-up, the pair have remained friends and will spend the Christmas holidays together.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
After six years of marriage and amidst repeated rumours of a split, Nick Cannon confirmed that he and wife Mariah were done. In August, he said, "There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months... My main focus is my kids." The couple who have already filed for a divorce are parents to three-year-old twins Monroe and Morrocco.

Frieda Pinto and Dev Patel
The Slumdog Millionaire sweethearts Freida Pinto and Dev Patel ended their six-year-long courtship recently. The actors who met on the sets of the Oscar-winning movie in 2008, made their relationship work despite the age gap. Sources say the pair had been done for a while and Freida's friends are reportedly already setting her up.

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas
After nearly 20 years of being together, Melanie and Antonio shocked everyone when they announced their split. The couple's rep released a statement, "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost 20-year marriage in a loving and friendly manner honouring and respecting each other, our family, and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together." Melanie asked for child support and custody of their daughter, Stella, 17.

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy
The couple who got engaged in 2011 but had not set a wedding date, recently called it splits. Kate's rep confirmed the news and Matt took to Twitter to say, "Love all of you guys! We're both very happy, it's for the best. Thanks for your kind words..." Rumours of the couple splitting first surfaced as Kate was often spotted without her engagement ring. They are parents to a three-year-old son Bingham Hawn Bellamy.

Katy Perry and John Mayer
After two years of being in an on-again-off-again relationship Katy and John split for good in February. The songstress apparently caught boyfriend John cheating on her with his SoulCycle instructor, Lauren McHale. Since then Katy has spoken out about how she had to go through therapy to get over the break-up.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
High school sweethearts Robin and Paula announced that they were ending their eight-year marriage recently. The couple said, "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time." Word that their marriage was in trouble has been doing the rounds since Robin's famous video of Blurred Lines was released. He did try to woo her back, even dedicating an album to her but to no avail.

Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult
In August, JLaw and Nicholas who met while working on 2011's X-Men: First Class split for good. Sources claim it was the long-distance that took a toll on the relationship. Friends say the split between the two "was very amicable" and "They spent a lot of time apart because of work, and it was difficult on their relationship."
