Time and again, there have been films in Bollywood which have worked well, hugely on the basis of a good word of mouth. Wazir falls in the same category. Content-oriented, laced with some author-backed roles, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's presentation might have Farhan Akhtar and Amitabh Bachchan leading from the forefront but the film needed a good public response to pick up. And so it did.
As Farhan celebrates his birthday on Saturday, he will be rather relieved to now see the growth that Wazir has witnessed at the box office. After collecting Rs 5.25 crore on Friday, the film was given a decent rating for its otherwise low opening mark. But the trend has always been that for such films. Even Piku opened around the same range and there onwards, it recreated history.
Can we expect the same in case of Wazir? Not that much. Piku was a slice of life film, high on emotions. Wazir is a thriller and the shock value disappears once the suspense is out and given the advent of social media, if you don't watch thrillers in the first week, the probability of the suspense getting spoiled for you is much higher.
Nevertheless, Wazir has seen a sharp growth on its second day. With a positive word of mouth that has ensued, the second day collections might spike up to the Rs 7-8 crore mark which is commendable and if the growth continues, then a Rs 10 crore Sunday also seems possible. Besides, the Christmas releases Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani are slowly losing steam and hence people are expected to flock to theatres to watch Wazir now.
As of now, a solid opening weekend of over Rs 20 crore seems to be on the cards. But all depends on how the film fares from here onwards. As of now, this might be a breather for Farhan on his birthday!
