An eventful year for Bollywood, 2013 was equally rocking in terms of music. While Hindi films are not new to item songs, we can safely say that this year was the most prolific when it came to belting out some foot-tapping and hip-shaking numbers.
We saw Bollywood experimenting heavily with its songs, be it the music or lyrics. While some tracks hit the bull's eye, others just faded into oblivion or remained in public memory for not-so-desirable reasons. Here is a look at some of 2013's best and worst item numbers:
Dhoom Macha Le
2013's last item song has become a rage, thanks to Katrina Kaif, who sizzled like she has never done before on screen. Set to the same tune as the previous title tracks, the song has a western feel to it.
While the music is catchy, one cannot deny that Katrina's sexy avataar has its popularity soaring by the day. The babe looks her best in the black skimpy outfit and a red lipstick to up the heat. Composed by Pritam, the song has been sung by Aditi Singh Sharma.
Lungi Dance
This colouful tribute to 'Thalaivaa' Rajinikanth from the film Chennai Express became an instant hit with the masses. Sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh, the song has Shah Rukh Khan and leggy lass Deepika Padukone grooving to the catchy tune. The song got a go ahead from the Tamil superstar himself.
Ram Chahe Leela
Priyanka Chopra had quite a few shots at item numbers this year (Babli Badmash from Shootout At Wadala and Pinky from Zanjeer), but hit the nail on the head with this modern mujra in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ramleela.
Wearing a white choli and dhoti with a thigh-high slit, Piggy Chops set the screens on fire in this song. The tattoo above her waist just added to her sensuality. Voiced by Bhoomi Trivedi of Indian Idol fame, the song was by far one of the best of 2013.
Party On My Mind
This song from Race 2 had a lot going for it. While Deepika Padukone, Ameesha Patel and Jacqueline Fernandez upped the oomph factor, John and Saif too sizzled with chiselled bods. A catchy and breezy number, the song was an instant hit with the masses.
Dhating Naach
After a sombre debut in Rockstar and Madras cafe, Nargis Fakhri turned an item girl for this song from Phata Poster Nikla Hero. Matching steps with Shahid Kapoor, Nargis moved sensually ina black dress. We must say, the girl has got the moves.
Gandi Baat
This peppy number from Shahid Kapoor starrer R...Rajkumar was another hot favourite of the masses. While Shahid and Prabhu Deva matched steps with ease in the song, Sonakshi Sinha showed off some mean moves too.
One, Two, Three, Four, Get on The Dance Floor
Another foot-tapping number from Chennai Express, the song shows King Khan matching steps with southern siren Priyamani. Sung by composer duo Vishal-Shekhar and Hamsika Iyer, the track is still topping the charts in India.
Shake that Tooh
The film may have been a blink and miss at the box office, but this song from Gori Tere Pyaar Mein caught on. While Kareena Kapoor in the song reminded us of the fiesty Geet from Jab We Met, Imran Khan too rose to the ocassion and matched steps with the Kapoor gal.
While Bollywood hit the right notes with those songs, it went completely awry with some of its other musical endeavours...
Mumbai Ke Hero
This special song from Zanjeer remake is a classic example of well intentions gone wrong. The song meant as a tribute to Mumbai police received a lot of flak for its double meaning lyrics and choreography. The singing and music didn't have much going for the song either.
Jadoo Ki Jhappi
Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez turned a village belle for this desi item song in Ramaiyya Vastavaiya. While she tried her best, her booty shaking failed to impress the audiences.
Pinky
This song from the remake of the 1973 hit film Zanjeer fizzled out just like the film. Priyanka Chopra was less than impressive in that tacky pink dress and the choreography (if there was any) did not have much going on anyway.
Thank God It's Friday
After wowing us with her impressive performance in Dabangg, Sonakshi put on her dancing shoes for this peppy retro number from Himmatwala. While Sonakshi's efforts were worth a mention, the song failed to impress the audiences.
Laila
This item song from Shootout At Wadala (the film had three item songs by three different ladies) generated a lot of buzz due to the presence of adult film star-turned Bollywood actress Sunny Leone. Unfortunately, the number failed to meet the expectations of the masses and slipped into oblivion without a trace.
Babli Badmash
Priyanka Chopra tried her best to save the day in this song from Shoot Out At Wadala, but with meaningless lyrics and shoddy compsition, the track faded from public memory no sooner than it came.
