The badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan enters his 48th year today and the superstar will be spending the day “working a bit” and interacting with the media invited to his house. Other than that, he hasn’t planned anything special to bring in the day.
“Birthdays are overrated. Whether it’s the 40th year or the 50th year, we are just moving towards the end,” philosophises the star. But yes, he feels greatly humbled that the various media including print, TV and radio make it a special day for him.
“Since the past five-six years, everybody talks about it and hundreds of people are outside my house to wish me. I am extremely touched,” says the superstar.
We ask him if his kids have planned something for him, to which he says, “My kids plan nothing for me. I have spoilt them. In any case, I am the father and I should be planning something for them.” SRK feels that any day can be a celebration by having a dinner with family and friends. He recalls that as a kid, he would read namaaz on his birthday and have a nazar ka teeka applied by his mother. “There were no parties or new dresses with bows and ties,” he smiles.
Ask him what does he wish for on his special day, and he promptly says health for his kids. “Since I turned a father, I only pray for that. Once, I met Richard Gere in New York and asked him how his kids were doing, he just said they were healthy. He said, nothing can be better, and I was moved. I wish for health. Happiness and everything else will follow,” says Shah Rukh, who feels that Jab Tak Hai Jaan releasing close to his birthday also makes it special.
The movie sees him returning to romance — a genre that earned the actor the title ‘king of romance’ — after a gap of six-seven years. “The fact is, I haven’t done too many romantic films. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Veer Zaara — only five out of 75 films! I never wanted to be a romantic hero,” he confesses, adding that it was Yash Chopra who convinced him to do love stories.
“I wanted to be the Baazigar — do cool, mean and macho kind of films. But either I don’t look macho enough or the films that describe me better in the minds of the audience are romantic. I find it very odd, because I am personally extremely shy about romance. The biggest killer of romance is humour and the fact that I am humourous means I can never be romantic!” shares the star.
Nevertheless, he is glad that the thing he is not comfortable with is the one he is best at. And the ladies will vouch for that!
