Across TV channels, India’s Best Dramebaaz is the number one non-fiction show as per TRP ratings. Zee TV’s brave attempt at slotting a kid’s show during primetime against pretty popular shows on other channels, paid off.

Having judged quite a few reality shows in the past, I thought judging a kid’s dramebaazi show would be a piece of cake. It really wasn’t. You see, unlike other reality shows in which participants indulge in politics to win over the judges and public, a kid’s reality show is really real. Kids don’t know how to indulge in politics. After all, they are kids and transparent in their feelings. For example, when Sonali Bendre, Vivek Oberoi and I praised a child’s act, the other kids would not be happy. Just like how it is in schools. Now that is real. Let me explain further...

One of the earlier shows I had judged was a dance-based reality show. There was this one particular couple whose dancing skills were like my cooking skills. Whenever I cook, the eaters puke. Samjhe? But, it was very evident that this couple really were after the prize money. So week after week, their horrible dancing skills were justified by them giving sentimental reasons. In a 13-week show, they managed to last four weeks, but in those four weeks, their excuses for dancing badly were mind-blowing...

Week One: We couldn’t practise properly this week as our kid was unwell and was hospitalised for measles. Obviously, we didn’t believe it, perhaps he was hospitalised after watching their first performance.

Week Two: My mother met with an accident and she had to be hospitalised. Wow! Kitna dukh-dard hai iss family mein. Obviously, we didn’t believe it.

Week Three: My choreographer met with an accident, so we got very few hours to practise. This time, we did believe them. After all, the choreographer did “meet” them. Nahi samjhe? Arre yaar, their dancing is an accident.

Week Four: My husband sprained his ankle and see what the doctor has to say. Now, the highlight was they had videotaped some family friend of theirs posing to be a doctor who spoke in Ghai-an English, ”I declare this client unfit to dance medically. But they are not listening me. So I am giving him painkiller before performance.” Now instead of getting upset at this couple, we, the judges were actually very amused as to the length of excuses they were going to cover up their bad dancing. And the highlight was because they were a daily soap couple, they used to cry while asking for votes from the TV audience. “Please, please, please vote for us.”

Coming back to India’s Best Dramebaaz which has its grand finale this weekend, all I can say is that this was truly a reality show. Because unlike adults, kids don’t fake.
