Ankur Tewari has had two big releases recently. He dropped an EP, The Little Whale, with Gaurav Raina aka Grain, one half of MIDIval Punditz, and Karsh Kale and Gully Boy, for which he has supervised the music, just hit the theatres as well. Mention that he’s doing good work in mainstream as well as in the indie scene, and the singer-songwriter and member of Ankur Tewari and the Ghalat Family band nonchalantly says, “I identify myself as just a musician. Some of my songs end up being in movies or in collaborations or solo projects. I think every story finds its place somewhere; it’s better not to force it.” The artiste talks about both the projects and upcoming works.

THE NEW EP

Ankur, Gaurav and Karsh had been working on Little Whale for the past five-odd years and the Dil Beparvah hitmaker says it combines their strong individual and diverse styles, along with making them explore areas out of their comfort zone. Even if it took them that long to bring the record out, Ankur emphasises that they were not in a rush to release it.

IN NO RUSH

Not rushing to finish work is something he follows in his solo career too, “It’s interesting to not see your work as time-bound and submit yourself to it with complete honestly. You will know when you want to share it with the world,” he reasons before clarifying, “I’m not saying that you don’t keep a cut-off date but you need to have some buffer period, too. I like to take my time doing things, slowly and easily, which is why I don’t take up too much work in Bollywood.”

KEEP IT PURE

Ankur has won hearts with his easy pop-rock acoustic tunes and simple yet powerful songwriting. “Being as expressive and honest as possible definitely drives my creative process,” he states. That’s something he had in common with all the artistes on Gully Boy’s album. “They had so much integrity towards their craft, trying to create music that they believe in instead of what would go viral. That was assuring. We worked on the mix till the last minute to keep it authentic and pure,” he states.

COMING SOON...

Ankur’s next release will be the music that he has supervised for the web series — Made In Heaven, which will release in March. “It’s an interesting show and I look forward to seeing how my work will be received,” he says, adding that the musical palate is diverse since the series is based on wedding planners.
