Singer-composer Ankit Tiwari believes in giving back. So much so, he has decided to set up a music school dedicated to his grandfather Krishna Narayan Tiwari in his hometown Kanpur.

The first time we spoke was when Aashiqui 2’s Sun Raha Hai Na Tu was on the cusp of breaking big. At the height of the song’s popularity, Ankit came across as someone deeply connected to his roots. The Kanpur boy has, since then, gone from strength to strength. And after a successful world tour through several US cities, he’s back home in his self-confessed karmabhoomi, Mumbai, working on new projects.

But home is still where his heart is, and the music school is a dream waiting to happen. He says, “I’m planning to open a music school named after my grandfather. My basic training and early beginnings in music has been because of him. As a young child, I’d accompany him to the local temple for the bhajan sandhya (evening prayers) where he used to play the dholak. Also, I feel Kanpur has many more such talents (like me) just waiting for the right exposure and the right musical agitation. This is the first step. Let’s see where this takes me. I will need a lot of blessings and support.”

Gauging by the response to each single of his, we doubt he’ll be falling short of that anytime soon.
