Angelina Jolie has said that US must "lead the way" against torture in its policies and that any country in a leading democracy must set an example.

The Salt star told BBC Arabic that there are reasons why we have laws against torture and reasons why we have Geneva Conventions and we must follow them.

She said that people can't expect to break certain rules and behave in a certain manner and believe it won't affect the way other people behave and won't encourage how other people behave, so if everyone is who they represent themselves to be as Americans and as a democracy, they have to lead the way and handle themselves in a manner which is respectful to other human beings.

The UN goodwill ambassador said that people must hold themselves accountable for what they do and how they behave, they have to be leaders in this world and we have to do the right things and make the right choices.

Jolie added that if people want everyone to behave in a certain manner, then they must lead the way.
