The first major clash of the year (between equals, might we add) takes place on the Independence Day weekend. Aamir Khan has hinted that Dangal will arrive August 15, the same day that Rustom and Mohenjo Daro are slated to arrive.

Lekin kyun?
“This is shocking as Aamir had already reserved the Christmas Day weekend for Dangal. And advancing like this, and that too by a good four months, is unprecedented. More than anything else, this disturbs the Bollywood release calendar in a major way since there are biggies involved,” comments a trade insider.

Four free weeks for Aamir
An industry veteran wonders why Aamir would want to clash with Akshay and Hrithik when he has always been a Christmas favourite, like Salman is an Eid favourite. “In fact, the week prior to X’mas has been left vacant and even Aditya Chopra decided to bring his Ranveer Singh-starrer Befikre on December 9, so that Aamir gets a clean slate. The next major biggies after Dangal are Baadshaho and Kaabil, which arrive on January 26, 2017. He’d be getting four straight weeks for his film, had he stuck to his original release date.”

Hrithik makes way?
Trade pundits feel with Aamir’s preponing Dangal, a reshuffle is on the cards. “For starters, Mohenjo Daro would  move ahead. Since Ashutosh Gowariker is making the film with UTV Disney, who are also making Dangal, it is impossible that both films would come together. One can’t be sure if that would please Hrithik Roshan much since he has been without a release for over a year-and-a-half already, considering Bang Bang came in October 2014. It is tough for him to swap with Dangal on Christmas Day weekend either, since that would bring him quite close to his own Kaabil. It’d be really messy.”

Akki to stand ground?
Akshay Kumar might also be in a spot as he chose the I-Day weekend after much deliberation. “This is disappointing as it establishes once again that there is no unity in the industry,” the trade veteran adds, “We talk about it, but don’t practise it. When one big film decides to move around, it disturbs the plans of so many other films. If only the seniors in the industry exercised caution and let the adage of ‘live and let live’ in a better way, things would have been much smoother.”

Clashes 0f 2016
Ever since the beginning of the year, there have been a few box-office clashes, albeit between non-equals. Case in point: Airlift and Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 (the latter was a dud).

Clash averted!
It seemed like there would be a summer clash between Housefull 3, Jagga Jasoos and Raaz Rebooted, but that was averted as well with Akshay Kumar getting a solo arrival. The other two films got out of the way.
