After 4 years of 3 Idiots crossing the 200 crore mark, only few films broke the 200 crore milestone - Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express (2013) and Salman Khan's Kick (2014) along with Aamir Khan's own film- Dhoom 3 (2013). However, in trade circles, the constant buzz was that no one has been able to touch the ticket sales of 3 Idiots. Until now, the only film to have had a ticket sales of 3 crore was 3 Idiots. That has been the total capacity of any Hindi film.

PK has made Rs 340 crore at the India box office and has reached a magical figure of 3.5 crore ticket sales at the box office, beating Aamir's previous best. PK has emerged as the top 'ticketed' film in India, even leaving behind Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan’s previous collaboration 3 Idiots which has been topping the chart all these years.

The success of a film is also measured by the tickets it has sold at the theatres. So far, 3 Idiots which had garnered immense appreciation held a record among the Bollywood films in India of selling the highest tickets. The film, which has a very high repeat value, sold about 3 crore tickets across the country.

But Raju and Aamir's PK has broken that record and risen to the top by an additional 50 lakh tickets. So the total sales of PK sums upto 3.5 cr tickets. Vidhu Vinod Chopra who has been a producer on both the films was overwhelmed when he heard about this.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan have been record holders since 3 Idiots and now they have broken their own record with PK

Rajkumar Hirani shares, "It's a great feeling when two films very close to your heart get such appreciation from the audience. As for this one, I'm glad that people liked the concept. Moreover, I'm happy that people even in the interiors have liked this movie. I'm glad for everyone associated with the film as each person has worked very hard."
