Think of a patriotic number that has truly touched your heart in recent times, and chances are, you will find yourselves humming, Ae Watan. The composers of the beautiful song from Raazi — Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa — consider it one of the milestone tracks of their musical career. “What can you expect when you’re working with the legend Gulzar saab,” says Shankar, revealing that they came up with the melody within 10 minutes of hearing the lyrics. “The lyrics have a flow, which automatically lend themselves to a lovely melody. The beauty of this song is that it doesn’t talk ill of any other country, but speaks of remembering your own country, wherever in the world you might be,” he says as Ehsaan adds, “The situation for the song was really ironic, with a girl, who is spying for her country and teaching the children of the country she is spying on, to sing a patriotic song.”

With Independence Day around the corner, the trio pick some of their favourite patriotic numbers...

Vande Mataram
(National song)

It’s the most amazingly written and composed melodies in Raag Desh. Every time you listen to it, you get nostalgic, remember your childhood, your school, your country.

Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon

It reminds you of the people who have lost their lives fighting for the country, and whenever you hear the song in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice, it brings tears to your eyes.

Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera
(Swades)

It is such a beautiful combination of Javed saab’s lyrics and AR Rahman’s voice. This is amongst his best-ever renditions.

Haan Yehi Rasta Hai Tera
(Lakshya)

We have seen children playing this song while studying, playing, doing their daily activities, because it motivates them.

Jana Gana Mana
(National anthem)

It always has a huge emotional effect whenever we hear it. As composers, we believe it’s one of the most beautifully composed anthems in the world.

Bhaag Milkha
(Bhaag Milkha Bhaag)

The title track of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, sung by Siddharth Mahdevan is a youth anthem that motivates the youngsters to work towards their goals in life.

Nanha Munna Raahi Hoon
(Son Of India)

It is such a pleasant, yet emotional song.
