Over the years, Bollywood has paid rich tribute to our struggle for independence and churned out several films about our heroic freedom fighters. There have also been several stories about everyday heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their motherland.

As India completes 69 years of its Independence, here are 9 Bollywood films that incorporate the patriotic flavour.

Sarfarosh:

Laced with loads of emotions and patriotic fervour, Sarfarosh has Aamir Khan playing a cop whose family is attacked by a group of terrorists. The film tells the story of how ACP Ajay Singh Rathod fights back to stop the smuggling of weapons and drugs that disturbed peace in the Indian society. Sarfarosh became an instant hit and along with Aamir as the protagonist, people applauded Naseeruddin Shah who played the prime antagonist in the film.

Swades:

Brave and triumphant, Swades is a tale of victory, pride and patriotism in the truest sense. A definitive film that harks back to an era of socially-committed filmmaking, Swades had Shah Rukh Khan in one of his career-best performances. Playing a project manager at NASA who eventually brings electricity to his village in India, Shah Rukh Khan's character in Swades attacks the social evils in society.

Lagaan:

India's official Oscar entry in 2002, Lagaan had an intriguing story based against the backdrop of the most worshipped sport in the country - cricket. A David versus Goliath story told in traditional style, Lagaan is set in the pre-Independence era and brought out an untold story from the history pages of India's Independence. A little over 3 hours, Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama still is one of the most watched films ever.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh:

Numerous films and biopics have been made on the braveheart Bhagat Singh. Ajay Devgn's The Legend of Bhagat Singh was a fitting tribute to the story of this freedom fighter.

Chak De! India:

The story of underdogs, in a game largely neglected by Indians, Shah Rukh Khan took up the baton along with Shimit Amin to bring back India's national sport hockey. With 16 girls and a coach, not only did Chak De! India help highlight the forgotten sport, but also touched a lot of hearts.

Lakshya:

A lazy good-for-nothing guy eventually becomes a soldier and carries out one of the toughest assignments ever. Hrithik Roshan plays the role in Lakshya to the tee but it was Farhan Akhtar's spectacular vision which infused life into the film.

Rang De Basanti:

One of the most poignant films ever made, Rang De Basanti  was Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's most ambitious film till date. RDB's tale of friendship and the spirit of revolution is possibly the strongest film ever made on the topic in the last two decades.

Border:

An ensemble cast that can hardly be recreated in the history of Bollywood. With several stalwarts in one frame, Border not only stood out as the perfect portrayal of the India-Pakistan War in 1971, but was a testament to the indomitable human spirit.

Gadar Ek Prem Katha:

An emotional story of two lovers, with the Indo-Pak partition forming the perfect backdrop, Gadar Ek Prem Katha got the nation talking. Still ranked as one of the biggest grossers of all time, Gadar had Sunny Deol playing the perfect hero, instilling a sense of patriotism through his effective portrayal.
