Over the last two weeks, all the panel members of the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) have been summoned to watch films seven days a week, to censor as many as 60-65 films awaiting clearance this summer.

A source from the CBFC informs, “We had films in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Bhojpuri… It was an unbelievable bulk for summer. Our chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani cancelled all our holidays. We were watching films almost non-stop for two weeks with just a few hours of sleep. And that included Saturdays and Sundays.”

Apparently, the producers’ association in Mumbai sent a letter to the CBFC demanding to know why films were being delayed. Nihalani admitted to receiving it. “It’s ironical that we should be reminded of our jobs by the producers’ association when in fact we’ve made sure that not a single film gets delayed in the summer rush. We’ve certified 50 films in several languages during the last two weeks. The entire Board has skipped all its holidays to meet the deadlines.”

Is this the beginning of the ‘tatkal’ services, the CBFC had promised producers when films needed certification on a priority basis? Laughs Nihalani, “Technically, no. Tatkal is still in the process of being approved. But yes, since we have broken our own queue to meet the summer rush you could say we implemented an unofficial tatkal service over the last fortnight.”
