It’s Valentine’s Day and whether you’re a cynic or a thorough romantic, there’s no escaping the ‘love in the air.’ Switch on the television set or stream it, and you’ll be inundated with sappy movies and shows. If you’re done with the regular rom-coms and are looking for something a little different, check out the following movies that give love a different spin.

Her

This Oscar-winning film has Joaquin Phoenix play Theodore, a lonely man on the verge of divorce, who falls in love with his computer’s artificially intelligent operating system. Though their conversations, Theodore and Samantha (the female OS voice) develop a tender relationship. She proves to be a great support as he tries to let go of his past and date again. Watch this flick to know love need not always be of the physical kind.

Silver Linings Playbook

This unconventional love story focuses on a bipolar man (Bradley Cooper), who forms an unlikely bond with a young widow (Jennifer Lawrence) when he agrees to participate in a dancing competition with her. What’s refreshing about this film, is it exposes the real and messy aspect of relationships. It also draws light on mental illness in a not-too-serious and scary manner. Both actors gave commendable performances with JLaw taking home the Best Actress Oscar.

As Good As It Gets

Sometimes love can occur from the unlikeliest of friendships. This Oscar-winning film features a best-selling author Melvin (Jack Nicholson) who is compelled to take his injured neighbour (Greg Kinnear) on a road trip and convinces a waitress he’s fond of (Helen Hunt) to come along. On the trip, she discovers a softer side to the usually cynical and egoistic Melvin and the two fall in love. This one is definitely worth a watch!

Edward Scissorhands

This story is reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast with Edward (Johnny Depp) being a kindhearted man who’s ostracised by society due to his scary appearance — he has scissors instead of hands. He is rescued by a saleswoman Peg and later falls in love with her daughter Kim (Winona Ryder.) This heartwarming film shows how easy it is to judge people based on their looks.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

This Jim Carey and Kate Winslet starrer traces the life of Joel and Clementine — a recently split couple — who try to erase all their memories together. In the process of retracing their relationship, they realise what they’ve lost. The quirky film shows the imperfections and miscommunications that are all too common to relationships and that love is accepting each other, flaws and all.
