Arbaaz Khan's DKD starring Sonam Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma and Rajkumar Rao is a fun film...
Yes, it seems like a mix of few of the recently released Bollywood films - Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and Daawat-e-Ishq- to be precise, but Dolly Ki Doli still has its heart at the right place. Leaving aside the similarities in the concept, the treatment to Dolly ki Doli is very different. An easy breezy film entertains and makes you laugh. Despite having some major flaws in its narrative and plotline, here are 5 reasons why DKD still manages to be a fun time watch!
A 90-minute film, after ages!
Have you also been bored watching 3 hour long films that makes you play treasure hunt with your brains? Have you also waited for some films to flash the 'The End' board? Then, Dolly Ki Doli is your film. At approximately 90 minutes of runtime, DKD is a rather pleasant and a shorter film that starts fast and ends faster! Needless to say, the boredom and tha pain inflicted is also less. Remember I, anyone?
Sonam's vivacious avatar:
People say, 'she can't act' but nobody can ace roles like an Aaisha or a Khoobsurat better than this B-town fashionista. DKD has her in a similar space as well. Bubbly, vivacious and brimming with energy, Sonam's con-woman avatar definitely brings the house down. Rather pleasant, if not outstanding, it is Sonam's antics that keep you hooked to the screen. Our desi version of the Run-away (with the money!) bride, Sonam commands screen presence in a film that has three heroes!
Rajkumar Rao:
This man can do wonders. Whether it's playing the obsessed horny lover in Ragini MMS or its the more nuanced, subtle performance in Citylights or the power-packed lawyer in Shahid, Rajkumar is the new 'it' boy of Bollywood. He does not have too much of screen time but he steals the thunder in whatever little he did-especially with his almost perfect Haryanvi accent and typical launde-waale-mannerisms.
Rajesh Sharma and Archana Puran Singh's mad antics:
The director had a stellar cast but he could not make full use of it. While Rajkumar Rao and Sonam still managed to stand out, the other performances added to the laughter and the emotions but could not stand out as much. Pulkit seemed lost in thoughts, trying too hard to ape Salman's Dabangg avatar. Varun is cute but that's just it. It was only Rajesh Sharma as Rajkumar's dad and Archana Puran Singh as Varun's loud motormouth Punjabi mom who managed to make their presence felt amongst a sea of talented supporting cast from the ensemble.
Saif Ali Khan's surprise cameo and Malaika Arora Khan's 'Fashion Khatam':
It would have been better if it was kept a surprise but the producer and the team went all out, talking about the same. But even if you knew Saif would be there, you would be least expecting it when it actually happens! And Saif's nawabi avatar simply left us floored. We wonder why no one ever made an Indianised version of Prince Charming with Saifu! Other than Saif, it's Malaika who sizzles in the only memorable track from the album-Fashion Khatam. Reminiscing Munni, Malaika's Ragini gave the 'puri Kantar' the required 'Energee'.
