Are you a sucker for detective stories and suspense thrillers? Then add to it a bit of an old world charm and dollops of contemporary magic, that's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! for you. From Dibakar Banerjee's unconventional treatment to Sushant Singh Rajput's brilliant acting, DBB has many reasons for people to chip in their money for a ticket this weekend.

Here's 5 ways this detective has completely nailed it!

Dibakar's the man!

If you have loved Love Sex aur Dhoka and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! expect Dibakar to create magic on screen. Each frame of the film testifies the supreme creative prowess that Banerjee is known for. The ideal captain of the ship, Dibakar's uncoventional approach to Byomkesh gives it a wicked, sensational touch which was missing in the Bengali series. While in Bengal, Byomkesh is a Satyanweshi, solving cases, here we have Byomkesh fighting his inner demons as well. Another aspect which differentiates DBB from all other Byomkesh series is the manner in which Dibakar paints Byomkesh's character right from the scratch. This man's sensibilities will blow your minds and sweep you off your feet.

An incredible plot-line and a spectacular cast

At a time when most filmmakers are catering to the average Indian audiences by dishing out the staple, extremely ordinary masala entertainers with gelled heroes flaunting their machismo on screen, Dibakar takes an altogether different route. Here, Byomkesh is not the hero yet. He becomes the hero by the end of the film. Unlike most other whodunits, DBB is more of a howdunit or a whydunit and that will catch your attention. Neeraj Kabi heads the pack, delivering one of the strongest performances from the film. Anand Tiwari as Ajit, Byomkesh's sidekick delivers a stellar performance. Swastika makes a decent debut whereas Divya Menon catches your eye. With a storyline that's as mad and crazy as it is strong and complex, Dibakar's lucid narrative takes you to the finish line with ease. If you are expecting a murder mystery with Byomkesh unravelling secrets, DBB may not be up your alley. But if you love something hatke and unique, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is the film you need to watch this weekend!

Sushant, our new Byomkesh!

He won a million hearts on television and created quite a stir with his Kai Po Che! debut. Three films old, you can see Sushant evolve as an actor with DBB. The actor seems to have graduated with DBB and the maturity is evident in the manner Sushant pulls it off. Be it his dialogues or the strong silences, Sushant's eyes speak volumes throughout the film's two and half hour runtime. Subtle and nuanced, Sushant underplays it to his advantage and lets the character overpower his 'star' image. Taking up such a film is a matter of bravado, convincing the audiences a result of his powerful acting prowess. While he does not come across as the typical Bangali babu, you probably can't think of anyone better than Sushant to play Byomkesh. Why we say that? For that, you have to watch the film.

A perfect setting for the 'perfect crime'

Dibakar plays with the human psyche in a way best known to him only. The filmmaker draws you right into the film in the first five minutes and the in the next ten minutes, you are left chewing your nails to unlock the mystery. Banerjee, with his flair and keen interest in detailing, intricately paints a picture of Calcutta in the 1940s. The streets, the houses, the trams, and the situations— Dibakar carefully and poignantly creates a Caclutta that we have possibly never witnessed. At the backdrop, you have the Japanese invasion and the bombings taking precedence while Sushant's tryst with truth is played out from the front. Completely overhauling the world of Byomkesh, Dibakar brilliantly fuses the vintage with the contemporary, the classic with the modern and the result is astounding. Plus, the background score takes the cinematic brilliance a few notches higher.

The anti-climax...

Possibly the biggest pre-requisite for a perfect short story, Dibakar follows Kabiguru's words and gives us a climax which is more of an anti-climax. He had clearly asked everyone to #ExpectTheUnexpected and delivers it with what you can call the most unconventional ending for a detective film. Dibakar leaves the audience thinking and waiting for his next— something that comes out as a perfect finish for an incredible sleuth thriller. Rabindranath Tagore famously said 'Sesh hoye hoilo na sesh' (An end that ends the story but doesn't mean The End) and by the end credits you know Dibakar Banerjee has hit a home run.
