We live in a time where information is available to us at the click of a mouse. So in today’s era, it’s easy for us to find out whether a movie, or a show or a song has been shamelessly lifted off from some other show. That’s why our show or movie makers are making sure they are buying proper rights of the international shows they want to adapt. Like for example, Anil Kapoor has taken the rights to remake the thriller series, 24 as well as the upcoming Modern Family adaptation. Then there was the short-lived but enjoyable Sumit Sambhal Lega, that was a remake of the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

But there were some other shows in the past that basked in the concept and the popularity of the more popular international series, without buying the rights for the same. Here are five such shows that ripped off cult fav international shows.

Hello FRIENDS

Ripped off: FRIENDS

Hello FRIENDS was a show that stole the concept of everyone’s fave sitcom. Forget concept, even the characters and episodes were lifted from the original series. It had some really interesting actors in the mix like Cyrus Broacha (desi Chandler), Nikhil Chinapa (desi Ross), Simone Singh and Mandira Bedi. The show just ran for only 26 episodes, unlike its international counterpart. We wonder why...

Ek Hasina Thi

Ripped off: Revenge

The acclaimed show that made Emily VanCamp a household name paved its way to Indian Television in the form of Ek Hasina Thi. Though not completely a ripoff. the theme of this Sanjeeda Sheikh-Vatsal starrer was very much inspired by the revenge plot of the international series.

Jeannie Aur Juju

Ripped off: I Dream Of Jeannie

The English show was one of our fav series growing up. The show made us dream of having our own genie who is as beautiful as Barbara Eden. Our dreams may not have got fulfilled, but Ali Asgar’s surely did, as he starred in the Hindi version that was telecast on SAB TV. Though whether Giaa Manek (or Rubina Dilaik who later replaced her), who played Jeannie here, matched upto Barbara Eden is a matter of contemplation...

Jassi Jaissi
Koi Nahin

Ripped off: Ugly Betty

Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin became the reason why Mona Singh turned from a nobody to everybody’s fav next door girl. It is also a well known fact that the show is ‘inspired’ from the popular American series, Ugly Betty, which itself is a remake of the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea.

Karishma Kaa Karishma

Ripped off: Small Wonder

Small Wonder was one of the most popular shows in the ‘90s about an engineer who makes an android that looks like a little girl, and made her a part of his family. The makers of Karishma Kaa Karishma decided to play on our love for this series, and created an Indian prototype starring the cute Jhanak Shukla as the desi Small Wonder. Even her costume was nearly the same.
