On April 8, VHP sought a ban on Kamal Haasan's upcoming film Uttama Villain, claiming that the incarnations of Lord Vishnu has been criticised in the movie. VHP's city organiser in Chennai, Satyamurthy, said that the film's song 'Villupattu', which had conversations between Vishnu devotee Prahalada and his father Hiranyakashipu, made 'disparaging' remarks against Lord Vishnu. Several Muslim organisations have also rallied around VHP's demand for a ban on the film for 'insulting religious sentiments'.

But Kamal Haasan is never one to shy away from controversy. Here are 5 other Kamal Haasan films that ran into trouble-

Vishwaroopam - Haasan's last film ran into several controversies. The film was banned in Tamil Nadu for fear of communal violence. The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham alleged that the film implied all Muslims were terroists. The ban was later lifted by the Madras High Court. The Hindu Makkal Katchi raised hue and cry over the film's name not being a Tamil word, and charged Haasan with going against his mother tongue.  Theatre owners across Tamil Nadu protested Haasan's move to premiere the film on Direct-To-Home platforms. Haasan relented by releasing the film first in theatre and on DTH services a week later.

Dashavatharam - Haasan played 10 different characters in this magnum opus. VHP had raised objection over how the clash between Saivism and Vaishnavism was portrayed in the film. Meanwhile, an assistant director from the Tamil film industry, Senthil Kumar, alleged that the storyline of the film was copied from his script. The case went to the Madras High Court and there was a temporary stay on the film. But the case was later dismissed by the Court.

Vasool Raja - The Tamil version of hit film Munnabhai MBBS drew the ire of the medical community with Indian Medical Association in Erode calling the title 'demeaning'. The film's makers assured them that film was not directing criticism at doctors.

Thevar Magan - Critically acclaimed and considered a cult film, Thevar Magan ran into trouble with caste groups. It was felt that the film glorified within the Thevar community.

Hey Ram - The film was India's official entry to the Oscars in the category of Best Picture in Foreign Language. The period drama was caught in controversy for allegedly portraying Mahatma Gandhi in negative light.
