Set in 1893, when India was colonised Britain, the film's plot revolves around a cricket match to be played between a team of villagers against officials of the British government to stop them from increasing the tax (lagaan) on the village. Lagaan was the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language film category.
The film's cast included Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne, among others. Amitabh Bachchan lent voice for the narration in the film.
Made on a budget of Rs 25 crore, Lagaan was India's biggest film at the time.
In 2011, this film was named "The All-TIME 25 Best Sports Movies" by TIME magazine's special edition.
