Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle turned 77 on September 8.
Bhosle, who has sung over 12,000 songs in 18 languages, has worked with leading Hindi music composers such as Ravi, Khayyam, Shankar Jaikishan and Laxmikant Pyarelal. But composer RD Burman, who was also her husband, was the one who was able to exploit Bhosle’s talent to the fullest.
Known for her songs like Dum maro dum (Hare Rama, Hare Krishna) Mehbooba mehbooba (Sholay) Mera kuch saaman (Ijaazat), Piya tu ab to aaja (Caravan) and Chura liya hai tum ne (Yaadon Ki Baraat), Bhosle was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan. She also won the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1981 and 1986.
