 Dennis Quaid

Don’t you think you’ve become somewhat of a fan boy icon after doing movies like G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Pandorum and now Legion?
I just like good movies. My taste runs through all kinds of movies really, and these scripts, along with these directors, really attracted me to doing them. They’re fun. They’re fun to make, you know?

Is there a part of you that does it because you have kids that are of the age to appreciate films like these?
Well, my son is 17, and he’s definitely there. You get a good review from him, and you know you’re in the ballpark.

Tell us about your forthcoming movies — Legion and The Special Relationship.
This was a lot of fun to shoot. It’s a high-class, drive in-B movie. I just played Bill Clinton in The Special Relationship. It was fun but very daunting to play someone so well known. It was written by Peter Morgan, who wrote Frost/Nixon. It’s about the relationship between Bill Clinton and [U.K. prime minister] Tony Blair. The script was really well written and I couldn’t say no. I was a bit afraid to do it but I feel like if I’m afraid of something that’s probably the thing I should do…and it’s Bill Clinton.

Don’t you think Legion might run into a controversy as it has things like people possessed not by demons, but by angels?
I don’t think it is going to be on the Vatican must-see list, but it is thought provoking. It’s more Old Testament than New Testament with God’s wrath and all that.

What are your favourite sci-fi films? Have you always been a fan of the genre?
Yeah, I have. I love 2001: A Space Odyssey, of course. I loved Alien.

You are also called a workaholic.
I think so. I love to work. I actually enjoy it now more than I did when I was in my 20’s. I don’t know why, but I’m just grateful. The roles are good and the scripts are good and I have nothing to prove. I just do the things that I really like to do.

You have received so many awards and accolades. Are you content as an actor?
I’m just glad to still be here. A lot of people that I started out with, I don’t know where they are. I guess it takes tenacity to still be doing this, and luck, but I’ve been very blessed.

Talk us through your love for music.
I like acting, and being a musician. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. But I really like my day job. I’ve always played music since I was 12 and I guess I always will. The band and I have been together for seven/eight years now. We have a lot of history, but I don’t want a career in music. I like keeping busy.
