Vinod Khanna is back with a slew of films and a biography

You had announcement your retirement years ago. How is it that you have signed so many films now?
I was away from the film industry for almost 10 years and had delved into religion (Khanna was living at the Osho Ashram in the US). But now, I need the money to raise Sakshi and Shraddha (Khanna’s children from his second marriage to Kavita). So, I am signing anything that comes my way today.

You are a BJP leader. Are you playing the role of Naxalite leader in an upcoming film?
Yes, in Red Alert, I play a Naxalite. However, I do not mix my political inclinations with my roles. I don’t believe in violence, yet, I think that certain loopholes in our system itself have given birth to violence. It’s very easy to say that Naxalites are terrorists but it is harder to look into their poverty and the frustration. Having said that, it is also true that I don’t support violence.

Is your character is inspired by Naxal leader, Kobad Gandhi, who was recently arrested?
I play a character that propagates the philosophy of the Naxalite movement and shapes the propaganda for the party. I can’t comment further. The resemblance to Kobad Gandhi is coincidental.

Is it true that you are writing your own biography?
Yes. I am working on my biography and am looking for a publisher.

Some believe you are reclusive and feel lonely these days...
I try to keep myself occupied by reading horse-riding. Besides, politics keeps me on my toes. So, I don’t leave much room for loneliness to set in. I have
taken up more work now. I am doing another film with Salman Khan and there are three others in the pipeline.
