Genelia D’Souza

This is going to be her last Christmas as a singleton, before she ties the knot with actor Riteish Deshmukh, but actress Genelia D’Souza is no less excited about it. She recalls some of the best times she’s had during the festive season, in a candid chat with
DNA,

Christmas is now seen as an occasion when the whole world celebrates universal brotherhood. What does it mean to you?
For me, Christmas has always been a festival that brings the entire family together. We could all be in different parts of the world, knee-deep in work, but when it’s Christmas we make sure that everyone’s back home for it. There is just something about this festival — it’s the end of the year, so it’s just about coming together and celebrating everything that happened in
the year, good or bad.

Is there a special way you celebrate Christmas every year?
We try and stick to tradition. So, every year our Christmas tree is up the week before Christmas, to set off the holiday season. Just decorating the tree is so much fun. Once the star is up and our stockings are claimed, it’s Christmas time! Then it’s all about getting everyone together for Christmas dinner, and Christmas shopping! The best part of the festival are the gifts that are kept beneath the Christmas tree.

Do you also wait for the gifts that are kept under the tree?
That was actually the highlight of the festival when we were kids — decorating the tree and looking for our presents which my mom used to find new ways to hide till D-day. Come Christmas morning, and we made quite a sight, tearing away the wrapping papers!

What are your most sweetest childhood memories associated with Christmas?
Christmas lunch! The food is unbelievable. The spread is planned weeks in advance and looks exquisite. The house looks beautiful with all the decorations up and the entire family together, christmas carols and the works! I used to be my mother’s little helper (smiles).

So, what’s your plan for Christmas tomorrow?
I have hardly spent any time at home this year, with back-to-back shooting schedules, so this will be the perfect break. Though I haven’t had much time to do my Christmas shopping, hopefully I won’t lose out on the fun because of it. I am just really looking forward to a fun evening with my entire family and close friends.
