'Thalli pogathe' singer Sid Sriram is excited about performing with AR Rahman

He is a singer who can move from Carnatic music to Western and Tamil film songs with ease. Sid Sriram has just performed in Chennai's Margazhi season while also having recorded a beautiful song for AR Rahman for Gautham Menon's film Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada with Simbu. The teaser of the song 'Thalli pogathe' is already a hit and the single is set to release for Pongal. In an exclusive interview with dna, Berklee Music College graduate talks about music, performing with AR Rahman and his goals for 2016.

How was Margazhi 2015 for you?

This Margazhi 2015 was very special. Carnatic music is my foundation and fountainhead. It's a very fulfilling form of music intellectually, emotionally and spiritually, and the energy of this season felt magical. Apart from my Carnatic concerts, I provided vocal and nattuvangam accompaniment for my sister, Pallavi Sriram's Bharatanatyam performances. She presented a work of her original choreography and we worked closely with some amazing musicians; it was a great experience. 

What exciting projects on the film front?

I'm very excited about the new song from Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada that I sang for AR Rahman sir. A clip of the song has been released with the trailer that came out on January 1. I can't wait for the full song to release. Also, I'll be performing with AR sir for his upcoming Chennai show, "Nenje Ezhu".

Are you planning any indie albums in 2016?

Yes, my debut full-length independent pop album, 'Insomniac Season' will be releasing in 2016. I've been working on this album in Los Angeles with Grammy award winning, multi-platinum producer/composer DJ Khalil and his team since March 2014. We are very excited about the music.It's an eclectic mix of R&B, pop, alternative rock, soul and Indian influences.

Were you in Chennai during the floods?

I was here in Mylapore during the floods. It was humbling to see the immense power of nature; it was equally as humbling to see the immense spirit and power of love exhibited by the people of Tamil Nadu. 

Any tips for aspiring singers?

Practice every single day, even when you don't feel like it. Talent is just a starting point; hard work is what refines the talent into becoming something truly special. Always listen to the emotion within you as a creative guide. Ask questions, and never stop having fun while singing. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable when it comes to your music.
