‘Nysa has made me more social media friendly’: Kajol on her bond with daughter

Kajol is a hands-on mom. I remember the last time we met, she had told me how she had always wanted to become a mother. “My mom used to beat me up because when my friends wanted to become a doctor or a teacher, all I wanted to become in the future was a mother. And imagine I was eight back then.” Kajol admittedly has been strict in inculcating values in her kids, but she has also taken a lot of life lessons from her daughter Nysa and son Yug as well. Nysa is only 13, but has a ‘sharp brain’ and is an avid reader, just like mom, Kajol.

Here, Kads opens up on her relationship with her daughter and how the latter has made her more digital media friendly...

Nysa is 13 and they say that for a teenage daughter, her mom becomes her best friend. Do you guys share clothes and all?

We have definitely come to the sharing of clothes and make-up business. But I don’t know if we have become such good friends yet (Laughs).

Why?

I think it’s because she is a teenager. When you were a teenager, I doubt you were your father’s best friend. Nysa and I may not be best friends, too. I don’t believe we are best friends.  But what I do believe, is that today, I can talk to her about things that I could not probably earlier and she can talk to me about certain things as well which she couldn’t talk about earlier. Again, she has other best friends, but I am her mom and she loves me! (Smiles)

And she makes you do all the crazy stuff that you wouldn’t do otherwise!

Yes! Oh my God, don’t even ask me about it. She’s the one who convinced me to go on Instagram and she was like, ‘You have to have social media. Media is important, you are doing films and you need it’. She actually sat down and convinced me about it. And I told her that if you want me to do it, then you have to help me out with it. She was like, ‘Okay done! Will you give me an iPhone 7?’ (Laughs out loud.)

Have her ideas rubbed off on you now?

Well, I am definitely more social media-friendly now, thanks to Nysa! I am not one of those people who would resort to these otherwise. I don’t like most of the people I meet. I need to understand where I am going. It’s very important for me to understand what’s the logic and outcome of doing something. I can’t just do things on a whim. She was very careful. She thought it out and she explained it to me and she was like, ‘You know Mom, this is really important. You are going to have films releasing and this is important for when your films release, when they don’t and when you are in between films.’ I felt that made sense and she sat down and showed me everything. I said, ‘Okay, I agree with you’.
