Shankar Ehsaan Loy on music, films and change in preferences of this generation...

They may well be the last of the jodis of music composers (actually they are three) but Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonca proudly carry on the legacy of team work while creating music for cinema. Their movies always have a variety of songs be it Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, My Name Is Khan or recently released 2 States. In the times of one-month long chartbusters, SEL's music is a refreshing reprieve from remixes and ear-banging loud noise. In an interview, the trio talk about their latest hit, upcoming works and degradation of music. Read on...

The music of 2 States has been one of the best till now in the year…
It's a fun soundtrack. We haven't done a rom-com for a long time and this one was perfect. It was fun working with Abhishek and we took a long time coming up with the songs which is really good because you can work at a relaxed pace and be very objective about the work. The film and the music blended well and both went on to become a hit.

Which one is your favourite song in the movie?
Well I think this entire soundtrack is special each song hits a different emotion. Mast Magan and Chandaniya are special especially Chandaniya because it is a very different approach to what would typically be the 'sad song' in a film.

Much is said about today's generation's choice of music. Comment.
Well today's generation has exposure, almost over exposure, to different sounds and music that are happening all over the world, thanks to media and the most powerful being the Internet. The attention span is probably smaller because there is an information overload and only things which are special will really stand out. It gives composers the initiative to be more innovative and experimental while retaining melodic and compositional values which will appeal to people.

Do you agree that today's music has very small shelf life?
Well yes and now it all depends on the entire package how the music is and how it ties in with the film and how the film does. Albums like DCH, Kal Ho Na Ho etc are still very popular and have almost become catalog items. I think there all types of tunes that appeal to different people and different emotions. In the end there is good music and bad music and good music always is for the long run.

Do you think we are in fusion age now?
Fusion has been happening for years now from the 60s almost composers like RD Burman fused global music with Indian melodies. The same goes on now the palette has become larger there are so many different sounds and styles of music, the evolution of Electronic Dance Music and the new technology keeps adding the melting pot to create new sounds.

How is the music scene in India changing now? Is it for good or worse?
The music scene is good as long as people are appreciating good music. It would be sad if they got used to being dished out bad music. Change is always good people should be progressive in their listening and the composers have a responsibility to turn out good work which is progressive yet popular. In the bigger picture India has adopted new copyright laws which will encourage and respect composers and authors which is good

What do you think about rap songs which are topping the charts these days?
Well personal choices apart its a subjective thing but different strokes for different folks and the more the hits the better the music industry. A lot of the new songs have been mega hits which is really good. Its good to see people like Honey Singh rocking the charts his tunes are popular and well produced.

You guys have promoted many new singers, do you think music industry is now more open to new singers?
Well it is totally open to new singers because the music has become so varied there are so many more styles of music being composed and that requires different types of singers . Its a healthy environment for talent to get a break. It would be super if there were new avenues promoting non film music so singers would not be totally dependant on films to get their breaks.

Tell us about your upcoming work.
Our next release will be Shaad Ali's Kill Dill, we are working on Zoya Akhtars Dil Dhadakne Do, Swapnil Joshi's Marathi movie Mitwaaa, Subodh Bhave's Marathi epic Katyaar Kaljat Ghusli , a new film with Sunny Deol etc.
