When singer-songwriter and perfomer Kamakshi Rai says, “If you hear me sing Punjabi folk, Tamil songs or Hindustani semi-classical, you won’t believe it’s the same person!” it’s not self-praise but the truth. The runner-up of the maiden season of music reality show The Stage in 2015, has rendered a moony and jazzy English track, Dreamtime, with as much finesse as Tere Liye in Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. It took her four years to debut as a playback singer, but she tells us that she’s just getting started.
For Tere Liye, Vasan Bala sir (director) painted a picture of what he wanted this song to convey, and each line was approached with his vision in mind. The vocals had to have hesitation, but still be tender. For Dreamtime, we had the visuals playing in the studio, when Surya (Abhimanyu Dassani) and Supri (Radhika Madan) finally get together, and the latter does this adorable little dance through the park. I was dancing around the studio, too.
After The Stage, I did live shows and ad jingles for a year. Two years ago, I got into musicals and played the lead in Balle Balle and Sing India Sing. I’ve spent two years being trained to act, dance, and hone my craft as a vocal performer. So, I’m ready to take on anything now.
It’s the brief given by my director that dictates the style I sing in. It’s refreshing that makers are now open to putting western or world music influences in mainstream films. A decade ago, nobody would have imagined a song like Dreamtime being in a Hindi movie.
I had a blast working on both the musicals. I can’t reveal details, but I’ll be making my on-screen debut in the near future.
I’m excited to be releasing original music soon. There are film playback projects and web series, too.
