Palak Muchhal’s recent hit track Ik Mulaqaat from Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Dream Girl was recorded in just 10 minutes! “This has to be one of the fastest songs I’ve ever done,” she laughs and adds, “I imagined it would be received positively but the kind of appreciation it got has surpassed my expectations.” Around the same time, she also had the female version of Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’s (PPDP) title track. The vocalist tells us that the solo version of the number is close to her heart. Here’s another fun fact: The singer has sung in 19 different languages!

Here, she talks about her love for romantic melodies and why indie music is finally getting its due.

Both your recent tracks are romantic. Is that your preferred genre?

I am fond of romantic, sweet melodious genre and my voice blends in almost perfectly. Though, I want to explore other genres as well. In the past, I have sung some tracks but I’m particular about what I render. I especially don’t sing songs that have cheap and vulgar lyrics. This is my main criterion and after that, everything else follows.

Apart from Hindi songs, you’ve also sung in regional languages. How do you manage the transition?

I can sing in 19 lingos! Initially, I used to find South Indian languages a little difficult and singing songs in those is a different experience altogether. You have to focus on the dialect and the melody, so you have to concentrate on the song as a package. I have now started understanding and learning the language and enjoying singing.

Since the time you debuted (2011) to now, what changes have you seen in the music biz?

The current scenario is extremely respecting in terms of accepting new music, new voices. It is great to see independent music is finally getting its place in the market. And Bollywood music is not the only platform for artistes to showcase their talent. Anyone who is talented is getting work. I just hope audiences become more encouraging and accepting of these new voices.

What are your upcoming projects?

After doing PPDP and Dream Girl, I have quite a few songs and singles coming out pretty soon. It’s a really interesting line-up until the first half of next year.
