Amitabh Bachchan brings class, culture, and mass appeal to 'KBC': Siddhartha Basu

As the Shehensha of Bollywood prepares for his 70th birthday, DNA spoke to Siddhartha Basu, the brain behind Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), the show that changed AB's career, personality and catapulted him to instant fame.

As Amitabh Bachchan and KBC both get a year older, what are your thoughts on the super star and the show that redefined TV programming in a way no other actor or show ever has?
He brings class, culture, and mass appeal to the show which is unparalleled. The fact that aknowledge game has held sway for so long is dut to his immense appeal. It is a measure of the man, his craft and commitment, that as the show has grown into a life changing drama, he has evolved with every outing into an empathetic host, connecting more intimately with the aam aadmi, sharing his joys and woes, hopes and disappointments.

Was Mr Bachchan always the first choice for hosting the show?
Indeed that is the case. At a time when there was no question of a megastar, or any 'A list' talent turning from film to television, the very suggestion of Mr B as a host had the impact of a nuclear blast. He was a perfect fit with the format, but it was a long shot, and there were many nay sayers. But the broadcasters eventually persuaded him to accept.

What unique qualities does Mr Bachchan bring to the table?
His charisma, his eloquence, his gravitas, his courtesy, and his sense of drama.

It’s easy to be star struck in the presence of Big B. How does the team keep perspective and work with him effectively?
That’s easy. By thinking big, delivering on details, and keeping it professional, just like Big B himself.
