Golden Globes 2015: 'Boyhood', 'Birdman' take top honours; George Clooney awarded for lifetime achievement

The Golden Globes kickstarted the awards season in Hollywood on Monday morning IST.  The Globes have traditionally recognised films and TV series popular with the audiences. But this year it seems to have turned things around, picking several of the critics favourites. Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman and Richard Linklater's Boyhood had lead nominations in the films category while House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin were favourites in the TV and miniseries category. In the film category, the big winners of the night were predictably, Birdman and Boyhood. Birdman won best screenplay as well as best actor (Michael Keaton) and best film in the comedy or musical category. Boyhood won top honours with Richard Linklater winning best director, best supporting actress and the film winning in the drama category. The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne won best actor in the drama category, while Julianne Moore won best actress for Still Alice.  Amy Adams won best actress in comedy for her film Big Eyes.  Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel won best film in the comedy category, an award that many thought would go to Birdman. The TV and mini series category saw several upsets this year. Fargo and The Affair got much love, while True Detective didn't win any awards. Showtime's The Affair won best show and best actress for Ruth Wilson in the drama category while Fargo won best mini-series and best actor for Billy Bob Thornton.  Amazon Studio's Transparent took home the award for the best comedy as well as best actor for Jeffrey Tambor. House of Card's Kevin Spacey won Best actor in the drama category, the show's only award of the night. Maggie Gyllenhaal won best actress in drama Honorouble Woman. Breakout star Gina Rodriguez won best actress in comedy for Jane the Virgin. Normal Heart's Matt Bomer won best actor in mini-series.

While the Golden Globes usually promise a lot of entertaintainment, this year's show was more sombre with several stars showing support for the victims of the Paris attacks. George Clooney, Kathy Bates and Helen Mirren sported 'Je Suis Charlie' buttons. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made fun of the Sony attacks, joking that North Korea's condemnation of The Interview wasn't even the worst review the movie got. The president of Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Theo Kingma urged for the protection of freedom of speech. "The freedom of artistic expression is a beacon across the globe. We stand united everywhere from North Korea to Paris," he said.

Best Actor- Drama- Eddie Redmayne wins for his portrayal of scientist Stephen Hawking in the film, The Theory of Everything. Already a favourite this awards season, this win makes Redmayne the one to watch out for at the Oscars.

Best Film- Comedy or Musical- First win of the night for Wes Anderson'sThe Grand Budapest Hotel. Master of quirk, Anderson thanks random members of Hollywood Foreign Press Association while seemingly not thanking his cast and crew.

Best Director- Richard Linklater wins for Boyhood. Linklater's 12 year long production was an unusual and distinctly unique experiment in filmmaking.

"If you're in this room, you've caught the brass ring." It's the year of inspirational speeches at the Golden Globes.

Clooney does get a little mushy talking about finally finding love. He gives a shout out to keeping small films alive, "Birdmans will always get made."

He also remembers Robin Williams and Lauren Bacall, legends who passed away in 2014.

Best Actress in Comedy film- Golden Globes favourite Amy Adam wins for Big Eyes. She won the Golden Globe for best actress in 2014 for American Hustle.

Best Television Series - Comedy- Amazon Studios' Transparent  takes this one. This is quite an upset for Orange is the New Black who were favourites to win when Modern Family didn't make the nominations this year. A big win for online streaming platforms as well.

Best Supporting Actress in a TV or Mini Series- And the award goes Joanne Froggatt  for Downton Abbey. This was the show's first nomination at the Golden Globes. Froggatt beat our favourite to win Uzo Aduba from Orange is the New Black, who won an Emmy earlier this year.

In the TV and miniseries category, new comedies on cable television and online streaming platforms beat the network TV regulars for the Golden Globe nominations. HBO's Girls was the only returning contender for best television comedy. Other nominees are Netflix's Orange is the New Black, HBO's Silicon Valley and the breakout comedy of the season Jane the Virgin. Comedy regulars Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory are notably absent from the race today while Amazon Studios' makes its foray with transgender show, Transparent.

Show business satire Birdman leads the Golden Globe Awards film nominations with seven nods including Best Film- Comedy, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor- Comedy. Birdman will be front-runner this awards season in Hollywood. It is closely followed by Richard Linklater's Boyhood, which earned five nominations and was made over a period of 12 years. Martin Luther King Junior biopic Selma is nominated in four categories including best director for Ava DuVernay, the first black woman to be nominated in that Golden Globe category. The film stands out particularly in light of Ferguson protests, as America once again grapples with race relations.

It's a tight race in several categories but the Golden Globes promise to be entertaining, if nothing else. Here is the full list of nominees once again-
