By the end of the movie, we were pretty certain that the director, Quentin Tarantino, makes love to the camera in his dreams — every single night. True to his style of storytelling, complete with the drama, the action, bursts of blood clouds ever so often, the witty dialogues and over smart characters — Django Unchained is a perfectly cooked dish that you’d better eat hot. It would be cruel, seriously cruel, to give the plot away or even give a sneak peek; so what we’re going to do is tell you why you must watch the film.
One: Jamie Foxx as Django is a damn good reason for one. Rescued from his slaver by Christoph Waltz, Foxx plays Django to the tee. A character with immovable conviction and focus, Django takes the film, scene from scene, to its apex beautifully.
Two: Christoph Waltz as Doctor King Schultz. There would be no Django without Schultz. His character, as a retired dentist- turned-bounty hunter, forms the fulcrum of Django’s personality. The existence of Schultz is typical of Tarantino’s story telling; the protagonist almost always has one person to play some sort of a guiding light.
Three: Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin J Candie. He’s so bad that one can taste the evil in him from the minute one sets their eyes on him. A Southern estate owner, slave driver and a mandingo fight lover, Candie’s character has been created with a lot of detailing.
His love for women, semi-incestuous fascination with his sister and obsession with Roman classic characters, he’s practically like a courtroom jester in a Tarantino movie. Incidentally, mandingo fighting is where slaves were forced to fight each other where the winner was compelled to kill the defeated.
Four: Samuel L Jackson as Stephen. Now he might be Candie’s servant but Stephen does more than serve his master. The smarter of the two, Stephen is more like the pool of evil that Candie drinks from. Loyal to his owner till death, Jackson, even though he is in the movie for less than half of the duration, does such a fine job that you’re not sure whether to love him in the role or to despise the character.
Five: The music. It just brings everything together and makes the magic happen.
Now, here are the reasons why you must not watch the film, though we’re hoping you skip this part.
One: Blood. If it makes you queasy, watch something else.
Two: Reality. If you’re thinking the film has something to do with the abolition of slavery, don’t watch it. Also if you are wondering about the existence of mandingo fighting, don’t watch it. Tarantino didn’t set out to make a historical film (Watch Lincoln for that); what he’s done is give you something dramatic on a magnificently embellished platter.
Three: We’re fresh out of a third reason. Apologies.
There you have it, Django Unchained — a film that you can watch at least three times in one week. Have fun, y’all!
