Designer Shruti Sancheti, who is all set to display her Summer/Resort collection at the upcoming Lakme Fashion Week, recently got a letter from Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. Her line that’s been done with the support of Maharashtra Weaver’s Board — Indrayani, is inspired by the Swadeshi movement and aims at reviving the indigenous art of weaving. She further hopes to expose the younger generations to this traditional craft.
Shruti says, “I’ve often admired Modi’s work and wrote to him telling him about my collection. He reverted with a letter of appreciation, saying he felt it was time designers took Indian textiles to a new level. Adding that we should market the handmade, environment-friendly fabric to stand out in the crowd.” The base fabric of her designs, which she will showcase on March 25, comprise finely woven cotton teamed with linen and cotton silk, with influences of Indian as well as Edwardian elements of that time.
