Tennis fans were in for a treat when Swiss tennis legend, Roger Federer won his seventh Wimbledon title and regained the numero uno spot. Millions celebrated the win across the globe.
Not to be left behind were the city’s glamouratti, who were mighty excited about Federer’s victory and took to tweeting about it.
Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who was spotted rubbing shoulders with tennis legend Rod Laver, was in attendance watching the semifinals where Federer beat Novak Djokovic. He rooted for good friend Fed. “Roger the real champion!!!” he later posted. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, a huge fan of the player, too posted, “King roger congratulations! And to all your fans around the world and me!”
Actor Shahid Kapoor, a tennis buff, is also a die-hard Fed-fan. “Fedex off to a flyer............... Just pure class.Oooohhhh yessss fed u the man,” he posted. Actor and former rugby player, Rahul Bose too was seen rooting for Roger from the outset of the tournament. He wrote, “And the majestic roger federer. For the astonishing number of people who remember my pledge to say the third ‘Yes!’ only if federer won wimbledon, here it is : YES!!”
Business scion Sidhartha Mallaya, who’s currently vacationing in US, sounded jubilant with Roger’s feat at the Wimbledon. “Feel like a sense of order has been restored in the tennis world with Fedex the Wimbledon champ and new world no 1. McEnroe just summed it up perfectly saying that out of the greats, Connors loved the fight, Sampras loved to win but Fed just loves to play!” he posted.
Veteran actor Shabana Azmi, who was watching the match live in London for the first time, was quite thrilled with the experience of witnessing the historic win. She tweeted: “What a match!was rooting for Federer all along but Murray was terrific
too. Heart stopping moments. wimbledon rocks.”
Actor Lara Dutta, who was watching the match live with husband, tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi was rooting for Federer all throughout the tournament, but when it came to the finals, she was seen rooting for local boy, Scotsman Andy Murray. However, husband Mahesh Bhupathi seemed ecstatic over Federer’s win. “Really hope Andy wins Wimbledon one day. Only Roger could have beaten him today. Even in losing, he made the English cry with pride tonight,” he posted.
Tennis champ Sania Mirza, too, was extremely happy with Federer’s victory and wrote, “Andy :( thats the first time i have had tears in my eyes listening to a post match speech...Roger Federer ofcourse a genius! #respect”.
