A few days after the University of Mumbai kick-started the process of onscreen evaluation of over 19 lakh answer papers of various courses under it, evaluation work is yet to start in full swing as most teachers have not yet reported to the assessment centre.

The university appointed an agency on April 28 after a long delay owing to few bidders for the process. However, almost a month after the process was kick-started, the university has only been successful in scanning answersheets for various courses while the work of evaluation has not caught pace as most teachers have not reported back due to the vacations. The university’s Centralised Admission Process(CAP) centres are struggling to get teachers to evaluate papers as most teachers are on their vacations. “Teachers had waited for a few days for the work to begin even after their vacations started. However due to the delay on part of the university, it took a long time for the process to start. In the absence of teachers, work is stuck as there is no one to assess scanned papers,” said an official from a college in the eastern suburbs on the condition of anonymity.

Deepak Wasave, Controller of examinations at the university said that close to seven lakh answer sheets have been scanned of which 25 thousand answer sheets have been evaluated. “The evaluation work is a bit slow at the moment due to vacations but we are expecting it to start in full swing in the next few days” said Wasave.

With the delay in the assessment process, students are worried about late results. MA Khan, Registrar, University of Mumbai said that the university has appealed all the teachers to report to their centres immediately so that the process is not delayed. “We have asked all the teachers to cooperate in this exercise which would benefit students in the long run. If papers are evaluated at a faster rate, results can be announced early,” he added.
