After a long delay in uploading the details of its PhD scholars as prescribed by University Grants Commission (UGC), the University of Mumbai has recently uploaded a list of doctoral students on its website. While the 582-page list has listed the names of PhD scholars enrolled under the university, names of their guides, name of the department/college and the date of registration, other details including tentative completion dates and details about fellowships availed are yet to be uploaded.

“We are collating the remaining data, and the work of uploading should be done in the next few days,” said a senior university official.

DNA had earlier reported about the university’s delay in uploading the details despite several reminders from the UGC. On March 10, the UGC had written to Vice Chancellors across the country asking them to compile data of PhD scholars and put them on their university websites within two months. It had later issued two reminders and had warned that the names of institutes that fail to upload these details would be uploaded on the UGC website. Almost three months after the UGC warning, the university has now uploaded a list of PhD scholars with the date of registration but is yet to upload the complete details as prescribed by the UGC.

University officials said that the complete data would be made available on its official website in the next few days.

THE STORY SO FAR

  • Universities were given a format as per which details of each Phd scholar, including his mode of PhD, name of the supervisor, registration number, date of registration, likely date of completion, funding agency, etc needs to be uploaded on its official website.

  • The UGC had earlier asked for Aadhaar number of the students, a condition that it withdrew later in a circular dated April 28, to maintain privacy.
