Maharashtra's state education department has asked all the government aided primary and secondary schools in the Brihanmumbai region to transfer the accounts of its employees from nationalised banks to a district cooperative bank, a move that has received a lot of criticism from the employees.

As per a goverment resolution (GR) dated June 3, the Department has asked all the schools to transfer the accounts of its employees from nationalised banks to Mumbai district co-operative bank. "Employees of schools across the state get their salaries in district banks or nationalised banks . Currently, employees of schools in Mumbai have their salary accounts in Union Bank of India or other nationalised banks as per a GR dated October 5, 2011. However with a view to strengthen the cooperative banks in the state, it has been decided to switch to Mumbai District cooperative bank," states the GR.

The decision will be implemented from July 1, and schools have been asked to make the transition as soon as possible.

Principals have, however, raised several concerns about the decision. "Schools had switched to nationalised banks after the district cooperative banks failed to release teachers' salaries in time. The issue has never occurred since 2011. Besides, having an account in a nationalised bank is good as one can trust the bank and it's facilities. The government should not make such a compulsion," said a principal on the condition of anonymity.
