Given India’s growing ties with Israel and job opportunities in companies that want to invest in the country, JNU, which is the only university in the country to teach the Hebrew language, is starting certificate and diploma courses.

So far, the option was available only to JNU students studying foreign languages, history and other humanities subjects. But with the new courses, the university plans to expand itself in the field by offering it to outsiders as well.

In Jawaharlal Nehru University, currently 50 students are enrolled for Hebrew and the number has gone up from around 30 students in 2013. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the country, students are hopeful that job opportunities for them will increase.

A former student who pursued the course two years ago and landed a high-paying job in a multi-national company in Bengaluru spoke about why she wanted to learn the language. Sharing her experience with DNA she said: “I opted for Hebrew as an optional language along with my major in Russian language, but when I applied for a job in a multi-national company, I had an edge because of Hebrew. They offered me a very good salary and since there are few people in India who are fluent in the language, I was picked up easily,” she said.

Tarun Dev, another student who pursued the language last year said, “I studied Hebrew because I was interested in learning the history of Israel and Jews. It also has an advantage because not many people study this language and it gives us an added advantage in terms of job prospects.”

Talking about the prospects of Hebrew language in future, Khurshid Imam who is the sole faculty of the language in India and teaches in JNU said, “A good number of students study the language because of the kind of demand it has in multi-national companies that want to invest in India. Every year our students are recruited by companies like Oracle and Amazon who want to establish a base in Israel.”

“With political relations between the two countries improving, I am hopeful that more opportunities will arise. Not just in the field of jobs, but in academics also the demand is likely to grow. Media professionals will also have need to understand the language in the coming days, because be it technology, defense or diplomatic relations, Israel is everywhere,” he added.
