The Ministry of Human Resource Development on Thursday announced Swachhta Rankings for higher education institutions and private institutions have performed better than the government institutions.

The institutions were ranked in four separate categories – University, Colleges, Technical institutions and Government institutions.

In the category of university – OP Jindal University, Sonepat has bagged the first position and declared the cleanest campus in the country. Most number of institutions on the rank list are from Tamil Nadu but no prominent institute other than IIT Guwahati has made it to the government’s list of cleanest campuses.

The fact that government institutions did not take the drive seriously was recognised by the minister as well. While announcing the rankings, he said, “No government institution had made it to the top 50 of the university category which is why we had to create a separate category for them.”

Among the government category, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar has topped the chart, with Madurai Kamraj University at the second position, IIT Guwahati has secured IIT Guwahati has secured fifth position on the list.

Among colleges, Kongu Arts and Science College, Erode, Tamil Nadu has ranked first, among technical institutions, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore has secured the first rank.

The HRD Ministry had in the month of June this year decided to rank higher education institutions on cleanliness and asked institutions to apply for the Swachhta ranking before Ju ly 31. The ranking was done based on two components – in-campus hygiene, which gave 85 percentage weightage, and activities outside the campus, which will gave 15 percentage of weightage.

A total of 3500 institutions from across the country participated in the rankings.
