Allaying all the fears that education would be privatised and poor students would not be able to avail education, Minister for Education Vinod Tawde on Wednesday made it clear that allowing registered companies to start schools would help not only students from urban areas but also from remote and rural areas.

The state assembly on Wednesday passed the Maharashtra self-financed schools (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Act, 2017 after almost 3 hours of discussion. The amendments allow registered company under section 8 of company law to open new school in the state. Section 8 companies are involved in commerce, art, science, sports, education, research, social welfare, charity, protection of environment and such subjects.

Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Ajit Pawar, Chainsukh Sancheti, Jayant Patil, Sanjay Sawkare and others participated in the discussion on the bill.

Allaying fears expressed by many MLAs, Tawde said that there are many Corporates who want to spend their CSR (Corporate Social Responsbility) funds in education but they are needed to do it by opening a trust or required to spend through some other trust. With this act, Tawde informed, `such companies would be able to spend it by opening their own school and Government would ensure that they are not going for profiteering.'

Tawde made it clear that the reservation and other rules as well as obligations would be applicable to these schools. He said that as far as fee hike is concerned, for these schools, if 75 per cent members of the PTA (Parents Teachers Association) are in favor of fee hike, only then it can be implemented.
