The fourth cut off merit list was declared by the Education Department on Tuesday for First Year Junior College admissions. Lesser seats against a larger number of students applying for admission shows that cut off for Arts and Commerce streams is still very high in most reputed colleges like HR, Jai Hind, and RA Podar College.

While very few seats remain vacant in minority and reputed colleges for open seats, many students yet to get admission. A total of 81,063 applications came for the fourth cut off for the merit list while 49,062 applicants were allotted seats. In Commerce, out of 57,631 applications, 32,109 applicants were allotted seats. For Arts, 4,599 applications were received, of which 3,671 were allotted, whereas in Science stream, of the 18,113 applications received, 12,773 students were allotted seats.

In the first merit list, 15,249 students got admission, while 8,282 got admission in the second list and another 6,190 got admission in the third round.

Parag Thakkar, principal of HR College, said, "After the fourth round, we received a list of 19 students. In the third merit list very few applications had come under defence category, so most seats this time were reserved for the open category. Because of the disparity in the number of seats and number of students, the cut off for the fourth merit list has been kept high."

Echoing the sentiments of Thakkar, Shobana Vasudevan, principal of RA Podar College, said, "The cut off for the fourth merit list has come down marginally only."

Suvarna Kharat, Deputy Secretary of School Education, said, "There is no hearing in court tomorrow, so we will decide on minority seats then."
