Edu institutes warned on bias against transgenders

The circular highlights right to education to all members of society

The Department of Education will take strict against government educational institutions if found discriminating against transgender students.

The warning in this regard,  issued in a circular, says objection, denial or negligence in enrollment of transgender students in government schools will invite disciplinary action against headmasters posted across the state.  

According to the sources, the department in its circular sent to district education officers and deputy directors highlighted the issue pertaining to problems faced by transgenders in getting admission in schools. Taking cognizance of the issue and to ensure right of education to all members of the society, the department has written to the officials.

“We have issued a circular to all education officers to ensure that any school in their areas  do not deny or object  to enrollment of third gender, be it male or female. The right of education is for all and none should be discriminated against in this regard. If any head of the school denies enrollment to them, then officials concerned of the area should take disciplinary action against him,” said a senior official with the Secondary Education Department. He also added that family member of transgender can directly intimate of such denial in admission to the officers.

Apart from education department, the College Education Department has taken step to encourage  transgender students to pursue higher education by giving them additional advantage in eligibility. Under higher education admission policy 2017-18, it has been mandated that transgender students will be given special relaxation to get easy enrollment.

Admissions would be given on percentile basis this year. However, transgenders, dependents of martyrs from armed and para-military forces personnel would also be given admission on minimum passing marks, said the policy which was declared a couple of weeks ago.
