The demand for pursuing a degree in Psychology (Honours) in Delhi University is more than the seats available for the course — 68,000 applications for only around 462 seats. It is also pertinent to note that the course is mostly available in women’s colleges only.

According to the official data provided by the university on Monday, at the end of the official application process in DU, 68,602 students applied for admission to the course this year.

There are only 10 colleges in the university that offer a degree in Psychology, and of them seven are women’s colleges. The debate on why there are not enough co-ed colleges offering the course is an endless ongoing one.

A few colleges had even filed applications with the University Grants Commission (UGC) to start the course in the upcoming session but an approval from the commission is pending so far.

“Many colleges in the university want Psychology (Honours) as there is a great demand for it, but the proposal is stuck with the UGC. We have not been able to get through the bureaucratic struggles so far to get the course. Some of the most sought after co-ed colleges are among the ones that have applied to get the course,” said an official in Delhi University.

Even boys who apply in the university are left disappointed as they do not get the course due to lack of options.

“Because of the lack of seats in Psychology, we have to settle with subjects that we are not willing to study. So it basically disturbs our entire plan,” said Aman Verma, a student who opted to go to a private university due to lack of opportunity.

“I was very excited about getting admission in DU but despite scoring well I could not get a seat to study Psychology as their is lack of opportunity for boys,” said Saquib Siddhique.

The other option for students seeking admission in the subject is to study at Ambedkar University, situated in the national capital.
