Even as the new academic year begins for the University of Mumbai and its affiliated colleges, thousands of students enrolled under the university stare at a bleak future with results of all courses likely to be delayed till August.

The new academic year for university departments and its 800 plus affiliated colleges, began from Monday, June 5. However, with the delay in results, both students and faculty members are clueless about what lies ahead. "We are completely clueless about what is going to happen to the results. With the work of onscreen evaluation going extremely slow, there is no clarity about when students will get their results. Most departments might have to give provisional admissions if the results do not come in the next few days as they cannot afford to not start the semester until then," said a senior faculty member from the university on the condition of anonymity.

The university had received a lot of flak for introducing a new evaluation method towards the end of this academic year as experts were worried about the large volume of answer sheets that are to be assessed every year. Close to 19 lakh answer sheets of over 400 examinations are to be corrected this year. As per university sources, less than 10 per cent of the work is over, even as the 45 day deadline for declaration of results has passed for most exams. Meanwhile, a large number of teachers are yet to get their user IDs and passwords to log into the systems in order to begin the evaluation.

Deepak Wasave, Controller of examinations at the University said that the evaluation process would now speed up, considering the teachers are back from the vacation.
