Students from poor economic background who performed well in Class 12 CBSE examinations this year were felicitated by the board on Tuesday.

There were a total of 86 students including boys and girls who were felicitated in a ceremony in the presence of Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar and Minister of State, (MoS) Mahendra Nath Pandey. The board had selected 45 students, from government and government-aided schools, 31 from Kendriya Vidyalayas (Kvs), who had scored 95 per cent and above; 10 students scoring 88 per cent and above were from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

The students belong to diverse, socially and economically marginalised strata and have studied in the CBSE affiliated government schools, KVs and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (rural residential schools). Some of these students come from homes where the annual income of the parents is even less than Rs 1.5 lakh per annum.

Sharing his story, Prashant Chandra, a student of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya said: “I have two other siblings and both my parents do private jobs to support our education. Since I am a Science student, books are very expensive, I had to struggle a bit with that. Otherwise my teachers were very supportive and helped me achieve my targets.” Prashant scored 95.4 percent in Class 12, and has cleared the JEE advanced as well. Many others like Prashant who came to the event shared their stories of struggle and how they achieved success in boards.

The government has named this event Gun Gaurav Samman Samaroh and has decided to conduct an event like this, every year in order to encourage students from the marginalised sections to do well.
