The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared its Class 12 results on Sunday morning amidst confusion over its moderation policy. This year, the overall pass percentage was recorded at 82.02 %, showing a slight dip since last year, which recorded a 83.05% result. A total of 10, 20,762 students appeared for the exam in March 2017.

While the Trivendrum region recorded the best pass percentage amongst the 10 regions (95.62), the Chennai region, which Maharashtra is a part of, came second with a total pass percentage of 92.60. Students from 10,673 schools took the test across 3,504 exam centres in the country.

Like in 2016, girls have outdone the boys by 9.5% this year. 87.50% girls passed the exam as opposed to 78% boys. Raksha Gopal, a Humanities student from Amity International school in Noida topped the exam with 99.6% marks, scoring a perfect 100 in English, Political Science and Economics. Bhoomi Sawant, a Science student from DAV Chandigarh stood second with a score of 99.4%. Aditya Jain and Mannat Luthra from the Commerce stream in Bhavan’s Chandigarh stood third with 99.2% .

Principals have attributed the dip in pass percentage to a more stringent evaluation system. “This year there is an overall dip in the results which can be attributed to the correction. The Accounts paper also had some tough questions and English was a bit tough too, which might have led to the dip,” said Avnita Bir, Principal, RN Podar school in Mumbai.

While 63,247 students scored 90%, and above, 10,091 students scored 95% and above this year. Ajay Raj from St Thomas Central school in Trivandrum topped from the differently abled category with a score of 98%.

What was new this year?

The students diagnosed with Type-I diabetes were for the first time allowed to carry food items inside the examination hall to maintain their sugar levels and avoid medical complications.

Special Concession and facilities were extended to 21 categories of differently abled students.
