The National Investigation Agency (NIA) summoned  Islamic televangelist Dr. Zakir Naik's sister Nailah Naushad Noorani and her husband to its Delhi headquarters on Friday . Sources in NIA said Nailah and her husband Naushad, who are residents of Mumbai, arrived in the National Capital on Friday afternoon and are likely to be examined further depending on the requirement of investigators . The examination, according to NIA, is in connection to the case lodged against the Naik by the probe agency last year.

Agency officials said that the couple were being examined to ascertain whether suspicious transactions had taken place between private companies headed by Nailah and the  now banned Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), a organisation founded by Naik who is facing allegations of inciting communal violence and terrorism.

Confirming the development a senior NIA official told DNA, "The examination was a routine one and related to our probe against IRF.  We are currently investigating all aspects related to the probe and it is likely that more individuals will be called in for examination".

According to NIA, five private companies, in which Naik's sister Nailah is designated as director and additional director, are under the scanner after the agency found "connections" between the companies and IRF. Sources privy to the probe also said that Nailah's husband Naushad had served as director in the IRF, an aspect  which the investigators were keen on "discussing " with him.

IRF was declared a proscribed outfit after NIA booked Naik and others under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) that relates to terror conspiracy, Section 10 and 13 of UAPA, which deal with being member of an unlawful association and punishment for unlawful activities respectively and Section 153A of IPC (inciting communal hatred).

"Investigators spoke to Mr Naushad about his stint as the director in IRF. As the matter in currently under investigation, we won't be able to delve further into details of the conversation which our investigators had with the couple", a NIA official said.

"Documents pertaining to inflow and outflow of foreign and domestic funding to IRF have been scrutinised after they were recovered during search operations. So far investigation has revealed that the proscribed IRF had close connections with Harmony Media, Longlast Constructions, Right Property Solutions, Majestic Perfumes and Alpha Lubricants. The examination on Friday was aimed to shed more light on relations between the said companies and IRF,"the official added.

According to company records, Nailah is designated as additional director Longlast Constructions and Right Property Solutions with the appointment date set to March 12, 2013. She was appointed as director in Harmony Media the very next day. Furthermore, Nailah was appointed as director in Majestic Perfumes and Alpha Lubricants on May 22, 2015.
