Hafeez, a 21-year old youth, had just written his class XII exam at his native village in UP and wanted to earn more money to help his father, who is constructing a new house for the family. But in Delhi, a minor argument over an alleged robbery attempt proved fatal for him.

An auto-rickshaw driver who first demanded extra fare from Hafeez and his brother Nafeez later dropped them for what they were willing to pay, only to rob them later. The accused have not been identified till now.

According to the police, the incident occurred near the Akshardham flyover on Friday morning. The brothers worked at a factory in Badarpur and would often go home to write their exams. The duo hailed from Lakhimpur Kheri village in Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday evening, they left their village by a private bus and reached Delhi around 3am on Friday.

They alighted the bus to reach their factory in Badarpur. Narrating the sequence of events, Nafeez said that they were looking for an auto and many were demanding more. "One auto came to us and the driver first demanded Rs 350. We were willing to give only Rs 200. There was also another man in the auto," said Nafeez.

As they were about to start, another man came and sat with the driver. The auto driver did not say anything. Since there was police checking, the auto driver asked the man to sit behind.

"My brother and I were in the middle with two unknown men on either side. One of them took out a knife and asked us to hand over everything we had. We requested them not to kill us. Hafeez even handed over his mobile and bag to them. They threatened to kill us constantly, and after a brief altercation, they kicked my brother out of the auto and mowed him down," said Nafeez. He said that Hafeez was thrown out of the auto 100 metres ahead.

"I ran to save him but he had died by then. I saw him die in front of me. We have come with dreams and now I am returning home with his body. We wanted to make lives better for our family, including out six sisters," said a weeping Nafeez.

"A case of murder has been registered. We are trying to identify the auto rickshaw and the driver. Further investigations are on," said a senior police officer.
