Sundays are the only days for youngsters to laze around and wake up late in the morning. However, some 10-12 teenagers aged between 17-19 years residing in Veer Apartments, Sector-13, Rohini, woke up early and went door-to-door on Sunday morning asking for scrap newspapers. This was because they wanted to do their bit for helping the Nepal earthquake victims.

“Collecting waste newspapers is an initiative we have taken in the past too. People are not comfortable giving cash but are quite happy to dispose off scrap. We managed to collect 500 Kg of newspaper waste, which generated additional cash of Rs 6,500. This would go into Prime Minister’s relief fund,” said Prateek Bohra, resident of Veer Apartments

Apart from this, they collected Rs 40,000 cash and Rs 8,000 in cheque. They also managed to collect more than 500 kg rice, wheat, pulses, 1000 packets of Parle-G biscuits, milk powder, sanitary pads, more than 50 blankets, jackets, winter wear and nearly 100 bed sheets.

“I was in Nepal till 22nd for a family function. I had seen most of buildings had reduced to ashes by the earthquake subsequently. My relatives and families were stranded there and some had gone for vacations and I knew point-by-point account so it was quite realistic for me in that sense. Therefore, we decided to take this initiative,” Bohra added.

The residents also donated used clothes but the kids ensured that they do not use them as there are chances of infection. They are planning to sell off the clothes and buy new utensils from the money generated.
