For parents of young children, summer vacations are hardly a time to relax. The little bundles of joy, with excess time and energy on hand, can unnerve even the most stoic of guardians. But fret not, for help is on its way.

The India Habitat Centre (IHC) has come up with a slew of workshops that will not only keep the children occupied for the next two months but also hone their hidden talents.

Youngsters can bring out the actor, director, or writer inside them at the Advanced Theatre Workshop for Children, by V K Sharma of Khilona Theatre for Children and Young. This production-oriented workshop is for those in the age group 9-16 years, who have already had some exposure to theatre or have a natural talent for it. The workshop will culminate in a musical developed by students.

In a similar vein, renowned theatre personality Barry John's acting studio will focus on participants' creativity, confidence, and cooperation, developed through games, theatre exercises, and improvisations. Students in the age group of 9-15 years will be introduced to the world of theatre, acting, and storytelling, and will be encouraged to get in touch with their inner world and feelings as a source for stories and characters. They will script a final performance, developed from their own stories and workshop projects, and perform for family and friends at the end of the month-long schedule.

A five-day session for the kids between 7 and 11 years of age will focus on practical ideas to develop self-awareness, inner strength, and emotional intelligence through creative theatre, music and movement, games and exercises, and mindfulness techniques.

The closet Shakespeares and Enid Blytons can learn to give wings to their fictional characters through a week-long creative writing workshop, involving authors such as Devika Rangachari and Payal Dhar. A similar event by writer Sharmila Sinha will teach aspiring wordsmiths how to think out of the box, chisel their ideas, and spin them into stories.
