A bid to stop three men from snatching her handbag landed a woman in the intensive care unit (ICU) on Thursday.

The victim, identified as Sharmila Rai, was in an auto with her husband and his nephew in south Delhi’s Defence Colony area, when three men in a motorcycle tried to snatch her bag. Rai did not let go off her bag and fell out of the rickshaw. She sustained grievous head injuries, leading to a clot in her brain.

A police case has been registered but no arrests have been made so far.

“She was sitting in the corner and I was in the middle. Three persons came on a motorcycle and tried to snatch her bag. It was on her lap, and she clung to it. Both vehicles were in speed and she fell out of the auto,” said her husband Rakesh Rai, who works as a chef in the India International Centre (ICC).

He then raised an alarm and rushed Rai to the Moolchand hospital. She was later referred to the Institute of Brain and Spine (IBS).

Meanwhile, police are scanning the CCTV footage of the area to identify the accused, who were on a Pulsar motorcycle. Rakesh further revealed that the handbag had some jewellery, Rs 8,000 in new notes, a mobile phone, and debit and credit cards.
